In a candid interview with Brent Porche of Philadelphia’s 93.3 WMMR radio station, legendary Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has unveiled details surrounding his highly anticipated solo album, "From The Dark." Set for release on Friday, October 23, via BMG, this marks Iommi’s first solo studio album in over two decades, a significant milestone for the architect of heavy metal.
Iommi, whose distinctive guitar riffs and songwriting have defined a genre, reflected on the genesis of "From The Dark." "Well, I’ve been busy doing a lot of other stuff, of course, when we were doing the Sabbath thing, and I’ve done a couple of other projects," Iommi explained. "And so I thought, well, yeah, it’d be nice to do another solo album. It’s been 21 years. [Laughs] So, yeah, I’ve enjoyed it, and I’ve taken me time doing it. Like, when we do a Sabbath album, it’s always you’ve got a certain time to do it, then you’ve gotta record it, and then you’re touring. In this case, there’s no pressure. I’ve been able to do it when I want. I’ve got my own studio here [at home]. So I just come over and I start working on putting ideas down." This unhurried approach, free from the demanding touring and recording schedules inherent in a band of Black Sabbath’s magnitude, allowed Iommi to meticulously craft the material on "From The Dark." The absence of external deadlines provided a fertile ground for creative exploration, a stark contrast to the often-pressurized environment of album production for a globally recognized act.
The album features a notable collaboration with Norwegian singer Jørn Lande, renowned for his powerful vocals and extensive work with various hard rock and metal bands, including Masterplan and Avantasia. Lande shares writing credits on all tracks, indicating a deeply integrated creative partnership. Bassist Becky Baldwin, known for her work with bands like Judas Priestess and Evolution’s Evolution, and drummer Karl Brazil, a session musician with credits including Robbie Williams and James Blunt, round out the core lineup. The production of "From The Dark" was a collaborative effort between Iommi and his long-time creative associate, Mike Exeter, who has served as Iommi’s producer, co-writer, and audio engineer for approximately three decades. This established working relationship is a testament to their shared creative vision and efficient workflow.
The Genesis of "From The Dark"
The title "From The Dark" itself evokes a sense of introspection and the characteristic sonic landscape associated with Iommi’s legendary work. "It’s the mood of it, really," Iommi elaborated on the album’s moniker. "Jørn came up with all the lyrical side of it. So, I’d done all the music. But ‘From The Dark’ seemed like an appropriate title for the album." This sentiment aligns with the often-melancholic and powerful themes explored in much of Iommi’s previous work, suggesting a continuation of his signature dark, yet compelling, artistic expression.

The decision to enlist Jørn Lande was a deliberate one, stemming from a previous collaboration. "Well, Jørn did some work with us on the [Ronnie James] Dio [tribute]," Iommi recalled. "Once Ronnie passed, we’d done a Dio tribute in London for him. And we had Jørn sing two or three of the Sabbath songs, and [legendary Deep Purple bassist/vocalist] Glenn Hughes. So, I like Jørn’s voice. He’s a nice guy as well – good to get on with. And it just seemed ideal. It sort of goes with what I play, and I like that idea." This prior experience provided Iommi with a clear understanding of Lande’s vocal capabilities and his suitability for the material, cementing his role as the album’s vocalist. The synergy between Iommi’s guitar work and Lande’s vocal delivery is a key element of "From The Dark," promising a potent fusion of iconic riffage and commanding vocal performance.
Songwriting Process: A Familiar Yet Evolved Approach
Iommi’s songwriting methodology for "From The Dark" adheres to his established practices, yet incorporates the collaborative dynamics of working with Lande. "Well, I think it’s more or less the same way as I’ve always written," he stated. "I put ideas down, and then when we got Jørn in, ’cause Jørn lives in Sweden, so we flew him in and then played him some of the ideas and then adjust them as we went on. I might change the verse part or we might put a new chorus bit in. And it was same as I’ve done everything else in the past. Same idea." This iterative process, where musical foundations are laid and then refined through vocal and lyrical contributions, is a hallmark of Iommi’s creative output. The geographical distance between Iommi and Lande necessitated a focused approach when they were together, maximizing their studio time.
The origins of the musical ideas on "From The Dark" trace back to an initial concept for an instrumental album. "Well, how this started, really, was I started doing an instrumental," Iommi revealed. "I was gonna do an instrumental album, so I put about four or five tracks down instrumentally. And then I thought, ‘Oh, I don’t know. I think I’d like to do an album with a vocalist.’ So I put them on one side and then started writing riffs for a vocalist. And that’s how it sort of started, really. And it’s gone on. I haven’t… The good thing about this album, there’s been no pressure. I haven’t had to go out on tour. I haven’t had to have it done by a certain time. So I was allowed to be able to take my time on it and live with some of the ideas." This shift from an instrumental concept to a vocal-led project allowed Iommi to explore new sonic territories while retaining his signature guitar-driven sound. The unhurried production schedule, facilitated by his home studio and flexible arrangements with Exeter, allowed for a more organic development of the songs. "So what I’d do, I’d say to Mike Exeter, who’s been with me for, like, 30 years, I’d say, ‘Let’s work on a Monday and Tuesday,’ ’cause he’s obviously producing other things. And so we always used to put Monday and Tuesday on the side every week, and then if something cropped up, we wouldn’t work, if he’s busy or I’m busy or doing something else. So we’d work around each other, and then just come in and start putting ideas down. So it was all very casual." This flexible, almost informal, approach underscores the relaxed creative environment that fostered the album’s development.

Tony Iommi: A Legacy Forged in Metal
Tony Iommi’s stature in the music world is virtually unparalleled. Widely recognized as one of the most influential guitarists in modern music, his pioneering work as the founding member and primary composer of Black Sabbath is credited with the very creation of the heavy metal genre. His innovative approach to guitar playing, including his signature down-tuned riffs and dark, melodic sensibilities, laid the groundwork for countless musicians who followed. Iommi’s contributions have been acknowledged through numerous accolades, including multiple Grammy Awards, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and honorary academic distinctions in the UK. He has been awarded a doctorate from Coventry University, a Lord Mayor’s Award, and the Freedom of the City of Birmingham. Most recently, in June 2024, he was honored with an MBE, one of the highest distinctions in British public life.
A pivotal moment in Iommi’s early career, and indeed in the history of rock music, was an industrial accident in his youth that resulted in the amputation of the tips of two fingers on his fretting hand. Rather than abandoning his musical aspirations, Iommi ingeniously adapted, developing a distinctive playing style using prosthetic tips. This adversity not only shaped his unique sound but also contributed to the heavier, darker tone that became synonymous with Black Sabbath. Formed with vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward, Black Sabbath released a series of groundbreaking albums throughout the 1970s, solidifying their status as one of the most culturally significant British exports of the era and fundamentally altering the trajectory of popular music.
Over a career spanning six decades, Iommi has remained an active and prolific force in music. His extensive collaborations include significant work with the late Ronnie James Dio, a period that yielded some of the most iconic songs in heavy metal history. He has also released acclaimed solo material and, most notably, reunited with the original Black Sabbath lineup for the chart-topping 2013 album "13" and the monumental global farewell tour, "The End" (2016-2017), which captivated an estimated 1.6 million fans worldwide.
In recent years, Iommi’s creative reach has extended beyond traditional music production, venturing into broader cultural spheres. In 2023, he collaborated with the Birmingham Royal Ballet on "Black Sabbath – The Ballet," a groundbreaking production that brought his early compositions to life in a new artistic context. Black Sabbath also headlined the monumental metal show "Back To The Beginning" in Birmingham in 2025, an event that revisited the band’s origins. This retrospective performance served as a poignant farewell to fans, occurring just weeks before the passing of his long-time bandmate, Ozzy Osbourne. The ongoing legacy of Tony Iommi, now further enriched by the imminent release of "From The Dark," continues to inspire and influence generations of musicians and fans alike. The album promises to be a significant addition to the discography of a true legend, offering a fresh exploration of his enduring musical vision.
