STRYPER Guitarist Oz Fox Absent from "Throne Of Thorns" Due to Unexpected Health Crisis, Not Brain Surgery Recovery

In a candid interview with George Dionne of KNAC.COM, Michael Sweet, the frontman and guitarist for the iconic Christian metal band STRYPER, has shed light on the absence of guitarist Oz Fox from the band’s upcoming eighteenth studio album, "Throne Of Thorns," slated for release on September 25 via Frontiers Music Srl. Contrary to what many might have assumed, Sweet clarified that Fox’s non-participation is not a direct consequence of his recent brain surgery in 2024. Instead, an unforeseen and acute health issue related to blood pressure management temporarily incapacitated Fox, preventing him from performing his guitar duties on the new record.

"Well, believe it or not, it wasn’t related to [Oz’s] health issues in terms of his [2024] brain surgery," Sweet explained. "He’s been doing great with that. He’s been out touring with us and doing great. This was something completely different. This was based on the fact that he stopped taking blood pressure medication ’cause he’s supposed to take that every day. He has issues with his blood pressure, like many people do, and he stopped taking it. And we didn’t really know that he’d stopped taking it."

The discovery of Fox’s condition occurred during rehearsals, leading to a critical situation that necessitated Sweet stepping in to cover all guitar parts.

The Unforeseen Circumstances

The chain of events unfolded when STRYPER drummer Robert Sweet noticed something amiss during a rehearsal session with Oz Fox. "Rob [STRYPER drummer Robert Sweet] went into rehearsals with him and discovered, like, ‘Wait a minute. Something’s not right here,’" Michael Sweet recounted. "He had trouble playing and with his pitch and his hearing. His high blood pressure really affected that, and it was really high – going up, spiky, like go-to-the-hospital high."

The severity of the situation became apparent when Oz Fox arrived at the recording studio. "And we didn’t really know this until he came out to the studio, and he was having issues with it. And it was time for him to start playing, and his blood pressure was checked. We had a way to check it there, and it was through the roof."

The immediate priority was to stabilize Oz Fox’s health. "So we were able to get him some medication and get him to lie down and rest and able to get him to feel a little better. But still, when it came time for him to play, he wasn’t able to play. He literally couldn’t go from chord to chord. He couldn’t play. And it was a bad situation."

Michael Sweet Steps In: A Dual Role

Faced with this unexpected incapacitation, Michael Sweet made the decision to undertake the entire guitar workload for "Throne Of Thorns." Recognizing the urgency and the potential impact on the album’s production schedule, Sweet offered to fill the void. "And I knew the songs, so I just said, I suggested, I said, ‘Dude, don’t worry about it. I’ll gladly play the parts,’ and he was very relieved to hear that. And then when we got to the solos, the same thing happened. So I wound up, at that point, having to play all the guitars."

Sweet acknowledged the significant challenge this presented, particularly given his focus on vocal duties during the album’s pre-production. "I wasn’t prepared for it, being honest. I was moving into vocal mode at that time, and I had very little time – not as much time as I would’ve liked – to prepare for all the guitars, having to do that, and think like two guitar players. That’s a whole other thing. When you’re playing a certain style and that’s what you do, then you gotta try to think like another player and make it sound like two guys. That’s not an easy task."

Despite the demanding nature of the undertaking, Sweet expressed a sense of accomplishment and uncertainty regarding the fan reception. "I did my best. I don’t know if I pulled it off. Fans will determine that. But I think so far people seem to really like the guitars. And I haven’t heard any complaints yet, so it worked out."

Live Performance Adaptations for "Throne Of Thorns"

The inclusion of Oz Fox in live performances of the new material will necessitate adjustments. Sweet anticipates that only a select few songs from "Throne Of Thorns" will be integrated into STRYPER’s live setlists, and even then, Fox’s role will likely be focused on rhythm guitar.

"Yeah, they will, but we’ll only do a few songs live. Maybe the first two singles, maybe three songs to try to fit them into the set," Sweet stated. "And Oz will be primarily playing rhythm on those songs, so it’ll work out. It’ll be fine." This approach ensures that Fox can participate in live shows while accommodating his current physical capabilities.

A History of Health Challenges for Oz Fox

Oz Fox has a documented history of significant health challenges, most notably the discovery of brain tumors in 2018. This period has seen the guitarist undergo multiple medical interventions and periods of recovery, impacting his ability to perform consistently.

The initial discovery occurred in August 2018 when Fox suffered a seizure during an onstage performance with SIN CITY SINNERS at Harrah’s in Las Vegas. Subsequent medical evaluations revealed the presence of two tumors in his brain: one situated near his ear and another in the back of his brain. By August 2019, reports indicated that these tumors had shown growth.

This health crisis led to STRYPER touring Australia and Japan as a three-piece shortly after the initial seizure. During Fox’s recovery and inability to tour, the band enlisted guitarist Howie Simon to fill in.

Further complicating his health, Fox experienced another severe seizure in October 2020, requiring brief hospitalization. Most recently, his latest brain surgery in early 2024 forced him to sit out STRYPER’s "To Hell With The Amps" acoustic tour during the spring of that year.

STRYPER’s Enduring Legacy and Discography

Formed approximately 43 years ago, STRYPER has carved a unique niche in the heavy metal landscape, distinguishing themselves as pioneers of Christian metal. Their band name is derived from a biblical passage, Isaiah 53:5, which reads: "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."

Over their extensive career, STRYPER has released a formidable catalog of albums, including seminal works such as "To Hell With The Devil," "Second Coming," "No More Hell To Pay," "Fallen," "God Damn Evil," "Even The Devil Believes," and "The Final Battle." Their most recent release prior to "Throne Of Thorns" was their long-awaited Christmas album, "The Greatest Gift Of All," which arrived in November 2025, also via Frontiers Music Srl.

Broader Implications and Fan Reaction

The revelation about Oz Fox’s health situation, while separate from his brain surgery recovery, underscores the fragility of even the most resilient artists and the unexpected challenges that can arise in their careers. For STRYPER, a band with a dedicated global fanbase, this news brings a mix of concern and understanding. Fans, accustomed to Fox’s distinctive guitar work, will likely approach "Throne Of Thorns" with a new appreciation for Michael Sweet’s performance and a renewed hope for Oz Fox’s continued recovery and eventual return to full capacity.

The band’s proactive communication through Michael Sweet’s interview serves to manage expectations and maintain transparency with their audience. It also highlights the internal support system within the band, where members step up for one another during times of crisis. The success of Michael Sweet’s guitar performance on "Throne Of Thorns," as judged by the fans, will undoubtedly be a key talking point surrounding the album’s release.

The fact that Oz Fox’s condition was directly linked to a lapse in a daily medication regimen is a poignant reminder of the critical importance of consistent medical adherence, especially for individuals managing chronic health conditions. While the immediate crisis appears to have been managed, the incident serves as a significant event in the ongoing narrative of Oz Fox’s health journey and its impact on STRYPER’s creative output and live performances. The band’s ability to adapt and continue producing music in the face of such adversity speaks to their enduring commitment to their craft and their faith.
