As Elements Music & Arts Festival gears up for its return to the scenic Long Pond, Pennsylvania, from August 7-9, 2024, the independent event stands as a testament to sustained growth rooted in a vibrant community-first ethos. What began as an intimate gathering in a Brooklyn warehouse has steadily transformed into one of the nation’s most celebrated camping festivals. In anticipation of this year’s highly anticipated edition, Dancing Astronaut engaged in an in-depth conversation with Elements co-founder Brett Herman and general manager Dan Slutsky. Their insights provided a comprehensive look at the festival’s remarkable evolution, the exciting new additions for 2024, and the overarching vision guiding Elements into the future.
From Underground Roots to Nationwide Recognition
Elements Music & Arts Festival’s journey is a compelling narrative of organic growth and unwavering dedication to its core principles. Emerging from the underground electronic music scene in Brooklyn, the festival’s early iterations were characterized by a raw, participatory energy. This foundational spirit has been meticulously preserved even as Elements has scaled to become a major national event.
"Elements is very much a music and arts festival," Brett Herman explained. "It even started more as a party specifically than a festival, so we’ve always tried to keep the experience and the non-music things at the forefront. Personally, I’ve been going to Burning Man for 20 years, so that culture and those values were a massive inspiration." This deep immersion in participatory culture has profoundly shaped Elements’ identity.
Herman elaborated on the festival’s unique approach to attendee engagement: "We wanted to create something that’s a lot more participatory. You go to Elements, and you feel like you’re a part of the culture and the fabric of the event versus just looking at a stage and being a guest. The whole design of the experience really puts you in the driver’s seat. We love festivals and we’re inspired by many of them, but we’re really trying to create something that you can’t find anywhere else in the world."
This commitment to fostering a sense of ownership and active participation among attendees is a cornerstone of the Elements experience. Daniel Slutsky highlighted the significance of the Vibe Village culture: "A big part of that is our Vibe Village culture, which is essentially our version of group camping. We encourage participation, and it’s often been described as a festival within the festival. People bring full stages, art installations, or create these wacky interactive experiences. It’s very Burning Man in that way, while still being a music festival with major production. We’re focused on creating our own identity and building that sense of community as we continue to grow."
The Vibe Village, a concept that mirrors the spirit of collaborative creation found at events like Burning Man, allows attendees to contribute directly to the festival’s atmosphere and offerings. This decentralized approach to art and experience creation differentiates Elements from many traditional festival models, where programming is solely curated by the organizers. The success of this model is evident in the increasing diversity and scale of attendee-generated installations and performances each year.
Innovations and Enhancements for 2024
The upcoming 2024 edition of Elements Music & Arts Festival promises a host of new features designed to further elevate the attendee experience. Significant upgrades to the festival’s iconic stages are a major highlight.
"We’re upgrading two of our main stages with entirely new Fire and Earth stage designs that we’ve been working on all year, and we’re really excited to debut them," announced Slutsky. These revitalized stage concepts are expected to offer enhanced visual spectacles and immersive environments, building upon the festival’s reputation for cutting-edge production design.
Beyond production, Elements is placing a renewed emphasis on the overall guest journey. The introduction of a dedicated Guest Relations department signals a strategic focus on streamlining every touchpoint for attendees. "Beyond production, we’re constantly looking at every aspect of the guest experience. We actually created a brand-new Guest Relations department that’s focused entirely on making sure every interaction – from the website and social media to entering the campgrounds and leaving the festival – is as seamless as possible," Slutsky noted. This proactive approach aims to address common pain points in festival logistics, from initial information gathering to post-event feedback.

Further enriching the festival grounds, attendees can anticipate new art installations scattered throughout the wooded areas, alongside a broader array of activities. A particularly whimsical addition is a retro-inspired candy shop experience, promising a nostalgic and delightful interlude for festival-goers. These additions underscore the festival’s commitment to curating a multifaceted experience that extends beyond the main stages.
A Diverse and Evolving Musical Landscape
The curation of the Elements lineup is a collaborative process that emphasizes sonic diversity and the discovery of emerging talent. The festival’s approach to genre representation reflects a deliberate effort to offer a comprehensive journey through the electronic music spectrum.
"Our entire team is very collaborative, and that extends to talent buying," Slutsky stated. "We’re constantly listening to new music and looking at artists who are redefining genres. Rather than focusing on one particular sound, we really try to create a full spectrum of electronic music. This year we’ve leaned into everything from UK garage and house to dubstep and harder techno." This broad curation ensures that a wide range of electronic music enthusiasts will find something to resonate with them.
A key tenet of Elements’ booking philosophy is the support of regional artists and those on the cusp of significant career ascents. "We also make it a point to highlight regional artists because supporting talent early in their careers has always been part of our culture," Slutsky added.
Herman echoed this sentiment, highlighting the satisfaction of discovering and nurturing new artists: "There’s such an explosion of talent right now that it’s impossible to book everyone we’d like to. One of our greatest joys is booking artists who are just at the beginning of what becomes a major career. We’ve had that opportunity with artists like The Chainsmokers and Louis the Child, and we want people to come not just for the headliners, but to discover someone new." This commitment to artist development has led to the festival being a launchpad for numerous successful careers, a point of pride for the organizers.
The festival’s ability to successfully blend established headliners with burgeoning artists is a key factor in its sustained appeal. By offering a platform for artists at various stages of their careers, Elements cultivates an environment of discovery for its audience, encouraging attendees to explore new sounds and artists.
The Unseen Labor of Festival Production
The seamless execution of a large-scale camping festival belies the immense logistical challenges involved. Herman and Slutsky offered a candid glimpse into the demanding realities of producing an event of Elements’ magnitude.
"Planning really never stops. We’re already working on next year’s festival, and booking starts 14 or 15 months out," Herman revealed. "Behind the scenes, it’s a tremendous amount of work. We want guests to feel like everything is effortless, but you’re dealing with weather, vendors, supply chains, rising costs. It’s almost like running a temporary city. Our goal is always to deliver the biggest experience possible while keeping the festival accessible, and sometimes that means making difficult decisions about where to invest." The operational complexity is akin to managing a small municipality, requiring meticulous coordination across numerous departments and external partners.
Slutsky emphasized the often-overlooked intricacies of festival operations: "Festivals are a lot harder to produce than most people think. You’re building infrastructure for tens of thousands of people over just a few weeks. It’s definitely not as glamorous as it looks. I know way more about porta-potties than I ever thought I would, but it’s incredibly rewarding because we get to create these unforgettable experiences for people." The daily operational demands are extensive, encompassing everything from waste management and sanitation to power distribution and site infrastructure.
The financial pressures are also significant, with rising costs for talent, production, and site operations requiring careful financial stewardship. Elements, as an independent festival, navigates these challenges with a focus on maximizing attendee value while maintaining financial sustainability. This often involves creative solutions and strategic partnerships to mitigate escalating expenses.

A Vision for Enduring Immersion and Discovery
Looking ahead, the long-term vision for Elements Music & Arts Festival is centered on continuous improvement and deepening the immersive quality of the attendee experience. The ambition is to consistently surpass previous editions through enhanced programming and innovative execution.
"From the very beginning, every party and every festival has had to outdo the last one. Growth is great, but it’s not just about attendance," Herman asserted. "We want every guest to walk away feeling like this year’s experience was even better than the last through bigger productions, better art, more immersive experiences, and all the weird side quests that make Elements unique." This philosophy of iterative enhancement ensures that the festival remains dynamic and engaging for returning attendees.
Slutsky drew a parallel to renowned entertainment destinations to articulate their aspiration: "I always think about places like Disneyland. No matter what your opinion is, you can’t deny how immersive those experiences are and how every detail is considered. That’s the mindset we take every year. We just want to keep building on what we’ve created, bringing more creative ideas to life, and making the experience more spectacular with each edition." This dedication to meticulous detail and holistic immersion aims to create a world within a world for attendees.
The festival’s commitment to fostering unexpected moments of joy and connection is a key component of its enduring appeal. The organizers recognize that while the headline acts draw crowds, it is often the serendipitous encounters and unique experiences that forge lasting memories.
Memorable Moments: Grand Spectacles and Intimate Connections
When reflecting on standout moments from Elements’ history, Herman recalled the festival’s penchant for creating "WTF" factor experiences: "Every year, we’ve always tried to create some sort of ‘WTF’ factor. Going all the way back to our earliest events, we’ve had BMX riders jumping over fire breathers, the world’s longest wakeboard jump into the Gowanus Canal, skydivers parachuting into VIP, and helicopter experiences. Those larger-than-life moments are always memorable." These audacious stunts and grand spectacles have become a hallmark of the Elements brand, pushing the boundaries of what is typically seen at a music festival.
However, Herman also emphasized the profound impact of more intimate experiences: "But honestly, I think what stays with people are the smaller moments. It’s those unexpected interactions, whether it’s meeting someone new or having a spontaneous experience with a performer. Those personal moments are just as powerful, and that’s really what we try to create for everyone who comes to Elements." This dual focus on both grand spectacles and intimate human connections is central to the festival’s design.
Slutsky concurred, drawing from his own experience as a festival attendee: "As a festival attendee myself, it’s usually not the big headlining set that sticks with you years later. It’s connecting with someone new or stumbling into some weird, unexpected experience in the middle of the woods. Those are the memories I still have from festivals before I ever worked in the industry, and that’s a huge emphasis for us when we’re designing Elements." The festival actively cultivates an environment where these spontaneous encounters are not only possible but encouraged.
He then shared a specific highlight from the previous year: "That said, one of my favorite moments was last year when we convinced Pretty Lights to fly in two days early and do a surprise pop-up set on a renegade bus in the campground. It was completely unannounced, and people just wandered into this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Those are the kinds of moments that make Elements so special." Such unscripted performances underscore the festival’s commitment to creating unique and unforgettable experiences that extend beyond the official schedule.
With meticulously redesigned stages, an expanded array of immersive programming, and an unwavering commitment to its foundational community values, Elements Music & Arts Festival is poised once again to redefine the attendee experience. The festival’s leadership continues to push the creative envelope, reinforcing the notion that Elements’ enduring allure lies not solely in its impressive lineup, but in the rich tapestry of memories woven through shared experiences, both planned and serendipitous, that unfold between the sets. The 2024 edition promises to be a compelling continuation of this vision, solidifying Elements’ place as a pioneering force in the camping festival landscape.
