In a revealing interview with Chris Booker and Ted Stryker of "ALT Afternoons With Booker And Stryker" on Los Angeles’ alternative rock powerhouse ALT 98.7, SHINEDOWN frontman Brent Smith and guitarist Zach Myers offered an in-depth look at the band’s highly anticipated eighth studio album, "Ei8ht." Scheduled for release on May 29 via Atlantic Records, the album marks a significant departure from previous releases, not only in its sonic scope but also in its conceptual approach. Smith elaborated on the album’s surprising scale, stating, "It’s essentially a double album, ’cause it’s 18 songs. I think a lot of people felt like when we were releasing the singles last year that, ‘Hey, when they announce the record, it’ll probably be 10 songs, maybe 12.’ But it’s 18 in total." This revelation positions "Ei8ht" as one of SHINEDOWN’s most extensive bodies of work to date, promising a deep dive into the band’s evolving artistry.

The extensive creative process behind "Ei8ht" was a subject of particular focus during the interview. Smith explained the meticulous journey involved, noting, "It took a long time. This particular record was a year and a half in the making. The songwriting – we really pushed ourselves this time around. I say that – we do that on every album, but there was a lot going on in the band’s life, and there was a lot to talk about." This extended gestation period suggests a carefully crafted collection of songs, reflecting both personal experiences and the band’s collective artistic growth. A key figure in the album’s creation was bassist Eric Bass, who helmed production for the third consecutive SHINEDOWN studio album. Smith lauded Bass’s contributions, highlighting his exceptional talent and dedication: "It’s a record where Eric Bass, our bass player, was at the helm. This is the third full-length record that he’s done. Having a bandmember that has this kind of a skillset is not the norm, which we’re very blessed that we have him. But he went to the wall on this one. He worked really, really hard." Bass’s consistent role as producer underscores a period of creative synergy within the band, allowing for a cohesive vision across multiple projects.

Addressing the thematic coherence of "Ei8ht," guitarist Zach Myers clarified the album’s organizational structure. Unlike their previous two conceptually driven records, "Ei8ht" embraces a more liberated approach. Myers responded, "The latter. We just did two cinematically themed concept records, so it was, like, ‘How do we get away from doing another concept?’ But it is a group of songs that belong together on a one body of work, which feels great. And, again, it didn’t feel like we had to thematically stick to anything. And when you don’t have a lane you have to stay in, that’s always kind of nice." This intentional move away from a rigid concept allows for greater sonic and lyrical diversity, presenting each song as a distinct entity while maintaining an overarching sense of unity. This artistic freedom is likely to resonate with a fanbase accustomed to SHINEDOWN’s ability to explore a wide spectrum of emotions and musical styles.

The album’s title, "Ei8ht," was a deliberate and fitting choice, as revealed by Smith in an earlier conversation with Audacy Music’s "Katie & Company." He explained the intuitive nature of the title, stating, "The record’s called ‘Ei8ht.’ Yes, it’s the eighth studio album. It made sense to call it ‘Ei8ht.’ It asked to be called ‘Ei8ht.’ We tried all these other ethereal names and put them in and we were trying to be clever, and we were, like, ‘No, let’s just call it ‘Ei8ht.’" This straightforward nomenclature reflects a confidence in the album’s inherent quality and its place in the band’s discography. The decision to embrace the numerical significance of their eighth release signifies a milestone, acknowledging their longevity and continued impact in the rock music landscape.

The considerable four-year interval between "Planet Zero" (2022) and "Ei8ht" was also a topic of discussion, with Smith drawing a parallel to advice from the late Brad Arnold, frontman of 3 DOORS DOWN. Smith recalled Arnold’s prescient words: "I had a really good friend of mine, who recently passed away – he was one of my closest friends in the industry, Brad Arnold from 3 DOORS DOWN, when I met him in the beginning with our first record that came out in 2003, I remember he told me, he goes, ‘Son, you’re going to have your entire life to do your first record, and if it’s successful, you’re gonna have six months to do your next one.’ And he was a hundred percent right. So what I mean by that too is this record is a year and a half in the making. From the time that we kind of started on it, writing it, to getting it produced, getting it ready, the journey that it’s taken has been quite extraordinary for us." This anecdote underscores the demanding nature of sustaining a successful career in music and the pressure to consistently deliver high-quality work. The extended development time for "Ei8ht" can therefore be seen as a testament to SHINEDOWN’s commitment to artistic excellence, rather than a reflection of any lack of creative momentum.

Smith further elaborated on the album’s departure from conceptual narratives, emphasizing its traditional album structure. "The last two SHINEDOWN records are conceptual pieces, so this album, none of the songs are related to each other, but they exist on the same body of work, but they all are their own entity. So it’s a traditional record, and I love saying that, because sometimes people are, like, ‘Well, are you a concept band now?’ It’s, like, no, those records were conceptual because that’s what they asked to be. This is something where there’s such a broad array of styles on this record – it’s very much us, but it’s a rollercoaster ride." This description promises a dynamic and varied listening experience, showcasing the band’s versatility and their willingness to explore different musical avenues. The "rollercoaster ride" analogy suggests a journey through a diverse range of emotions and sonic textures, from powerful anthems to more introspective pieces.

The expansion into festival curation demonstrates SHINEDOWN’s ambition to create multifaceted experiences for their audience beyond traditional album releases and tours.

Continued Chart Dominance and Critical Acclaim

The anticipation for "Ei8ht" is further amplified by SHINEDOWN’s consistent track record of success. Over the past year, the band has released four impactful singles: "Dance, Kid, Dance," "Killing Fields," "Three Six Five," and "Searchlight." These tracks have not only reinforced the band’s standing as a dominant force in modern rock but have also achieved significant chart success. "Dance, Kid, Dance" and "Killing Fields" both soared to the No. 1 position at rock radio. Meanwhile, "Three Six Five" proved to be a global crossover hit, topping the Alternative radio charts, reaching the Top 10 on Hot AC and AC formats, and breaking into the Top 20 at Top 40 radio.

These recent successes have allowed SHINEDOWN to further extend their already record-breaking achievements. The band currently holds the record for the most No. 1 songs on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, with a remarkable 21 chart-toppers. They also boast the most No. 1s on Mediabase’s Active Rock chart, with 23 songs reaching the pinnacle. This consistent performance underscores SHINEDOWN’s unparalleled ability to connect with a broad audience and maintain relevance across different rock formats. Their legacy is built on a foundation of unwavering consistency, ambitious artistic vision, and a profound emotional connection with their listeners.

The band’s ongoing critical recognition is further evidenced by their nominations at the 2026 iHeartRadio Music Awards. SHINEDOWN has been nominated for "Rock Artist Of The Year," "Duo/Group Of The Year," and "Rock Song Of The Year" for their hit single "Dance, Kid, Dance." These nominations follow a landmark showing at the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards, where the band secured victories for both "Rock Artist Of The Year" and "Rock Song Of The Year" for their powerful ballad "A Symptom Of Being Human." This consecutive recognition at one of music’s most prominent award ceremonies highlights SHINEDOWN’s sustained impact and their consistent ability to produce critically acclaimed and commercially successful music. The nominations for "Ei8ht" singles at the upcoming awards will undoubtedly add further momentum to the album’s release. The band’s continued success across multiple platforms and award ceremonies solidifies their position as one of contemporary rock music’s most enduring and influential acts.
